Bronx, New York — The Garifuna Coalition USA Inc has announced that Bronx Assemblyman ERIC STEVENSON will present The New York State Assembly Proclamation of Garifuna Heritage Month during The Second Annual Garifuna Heritage Awards and Cultural Night on Saturday, March 26th 2011 at 7pm at The Hostos Center For The Arts and Culture, which is located at 450 Grand Concourse, Bronx, New York 10451.

Assemblyman Eric Stevenson represents District 79 in the New York State Assembly, which includes Morrisania, Crotona Park East, and East Tremont. He is a long time friend of the Garifuna Community in the Bronx and sponsored a Legislative Resolution memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to declare March 11 – April 12, 2011, as Garifuna-American Heritage Month in the State of New York, which He will present as part of the Garifuna Heritage Awards and Cultural Night program.

This year’s honorees of The 2011 Garifuna Heritage Award include, Rosemary Ordonez-Jenkins, Trish St Hill, Paula Castillo and Rosita Alvarez. The Garifuna Heritage Awards honor those who have made outstanding contributions to nurture and promote the Garifuna culture and identity in New York.
2011 Garifuna Heritage Awards and Cultural Night
A dynamic cultural stage production will be headlined by Chief Joseph Chatoyer Garifuna Folkloric Ballet of New York, Paula Castillo and J Dove Productions. The production will feature a Gunchei dance presentation and a reenactment of the “Battle for Yurumein” with the Wanaragua dance, which will pay tribute to The Drama of King Shotoway, in memory of William Henry Brown and in celebration of the International Year of People of African Descent.

The Garifuna Heritage Awards and Cultural Night is an integral part of the Garifuna-American Heritage Month 2011, March 11th – April 12th, 2011 in observance of the 214th anniversary of the exile of the Garifuna people from St Vincent and the Grenadines on March 11th, 1797 and their settlement in Central America on April 12th, 1797.
Garifuna-American Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize the significance of our contributions to the quality and character of life, and, through many events and activities throughout the month, for all people to gain a greater appreciation of Garifuna history and traditions, and of the role Garifuna-Americans have played, and will continue to play, in our society.

Una producción dinámico escenario cultural será encabezado por el presidente José Chatoyer Ballet Folclórico Garífuna de Nueva York, Paula Castillo y J Paloma Productions. La producción contará con una presentación de danza Gunchei y una recreación de la “Batalla de Yurumein” con la danza Wanaragua, que rendirá homenaje a El drama del rey Shotoway, en memoria de William Henry Brown y en la celebración del Año Internacional de las Poblaciones de ascendencia africana.
