I truely love what you all been doing to keep our culture alive, you all keep up the good work. My only concern is that i observe that you all speak Spanish when doing the masters of cermony, even the females who introduce themselves speak Spanish when i believe that they should have been speaking in Garifuna, after all it’s a Garifuna Contest. Here in Belize when we have our Celebrations or Garifuna Contest, we focus mainly on Garifuna and not English. But let say that nothing is wrong with you all speaking Spanish after all that’s youe main Language, Seremei.

Seremein lun baburuhaña, Linsdale. (“Thank You for writing, Linsdale” in the Garifuna Language. If I am incorrect, please correct me).

Aye, the tendency for the Masters of Ceremony to speak Spanish as opposed to Garifuna in the 2012 Miss Garifuna Cultural Pageant was noted. It’s tricky, but what makes this a complex issue is the fact that the majority of Garinagu are based in Honduras, which is a mostly Spanish speaking country. Many Honduran Garinagu speak the dominant language spoken there, which is Spanish and sadly it comes at a cost of losing (or never learning) the Garifuna language. I understand that a similar thing happens in Belize, except with the English language, which is the dominant language spoken there. From what I understand many Garinagu in Belize speak Belizean Kriol as opposed to the actual Garifuna Language. It’s a very complex problem but you are right, it is a Garifuna contest and the main mode of communication should be Garifuna. However, in light of the fact that many Garifuna people cannot speak the Garifuna Language, we all need to keep in mind that being tri-lingual also helps facilitate communication and understanding.

In any event, there was also a lot of Garifuna spoken in the 2012 Miss Garifuna Cultural Pageant–particularly by the contestants during the Pageant.

Aye, Miss Rio Esteban Ana Arzu spoke Spanish in the introduction of one of the videos and Miss Puerto Barrios spoke English in her introduction in the video and I guess that is their preferred mode of communication. Garinagu are less inclined to speak the Garifuna Language nowadays and you could even see it during the Pageant as a few of the contestants struggled with their speaking of the Garifuna Language. However they did speak it. Hopefully that encourages more Garifuna People to speak their/our native language. There is so much more work to do.

      Dei (or dari) amuñegu, Linsdale.
