Texas, United States — Garifuna American Woman JANET GUITY-SABIO recently published a book of poetry entitled, “Word Art Of The Garifuna Spirit”. The poetry is inspired by various circumstances in her life, particularly the trials and tribulations that she’s triumphed over with the help of the Holy Spirit and the spirit of her Garifuna ancestors.
The About Me section of her poetry book explains that Mrs. Janet Güity-Sabio is the eighth of ten children raised by a Honduran mother who was widowed at a relatively young age. Eventually, the children immigrated to the United States from the city of La Ceiba, Honduras by the late 1960s, which was a time of turmoil and social upheaval at the time due to Black Americans fighting for their civil rights.
Mrs. Janet Güity-Sabio didn’t understand the meaning of the civil rights struggle at the time. Survival in this new land was her number one priority. She endured loneliness and rejection by not being able to speak English, not being “black enough” for some, or being “too black” for others.
Some of the challenges that Mrs. Janet Güity-Sabio had to face over the course of her life include her husband’s battle with a degenerative disease, as well as her own battle with breast cancer. Her poetry expresses the tactics she used to triumph over these challenges as well as how she coped with the many emotions she felt during those times of hardship.
Mrs. Janet Güity-Sabio’s book of poetry, “Word Art of The Garifuna Spirit” includes illustrations by Victor Garcia. This poetry book is in English, is a paperback book and is 80 pages long. “Word Art of The Garifuna Spirit” costs $11.01 and can be bought on the amazon.com website.
