Los Angeles, California — Garifuna in Peril, a feature film written, produced and directed by Alí Allié and Ruben Reyes, screened at seven film festivals to diverse audiences across the United States this past April, winning three awards and screening to sold out audiences in Chicago and Houston.
New York, New York — In a promising sign, an appreciative New York City moviegoing audience attended the USA Premiere of the new independent film, Garifuna In Peril on SUNDAY December 3rd 2012 and embraced its real yet-fictional story of “the fight for the preservation of a culture (by those who are indigenous to it) that’s practically on the brink of extinction”, as popular black film blog SHADOW and ACT (on the Indiewire movie website) put it. Judging by a casual poll of post-screening internet reaction to the film, the answer to my previous question of whether moviegoing audiences are ready to see a movie like GARIFUNA IN PERIL is something the filmmakers behind this film would love to hear.

New York, New York — Are Moviegoers Ready For The New Film, GARIFUNA IN PERIL? Are they curious enough to learn about a people and experience a culture they most likely haven’t ever heard of? Will they be open-minded enough to dare to think about a culture different than their own? Will they be prepared to see a marginalized, little-known people in a brand new way (on the big screen, that is)? I can’t help but think about those questions as the moviemakers behind GARIFUNA IN PERIL prepare for it’s United States Premiere as it screens at The African Diaspora International Film Festival on SUNDAY December 2nd 2012 (5pm) and WEDNESDAY December 5th 2012 (8:30pm) at Teacher’s College at Columbia University.
